A tough new clampdown on Southend seafront cruisers is to be launched following a disturbing catalogue of intimidating incidents.

Cruisers - police are cracking down

Police commander Supt Mick Thwaites has ordered the closure of a section of Western Esplanade from the pier to Westcliff Casino in both directons from 11pm on Saturday.

Today, Mr Thwaites pledged to extend the operation to other areas if cruisers just switched locations.

He also revealed details of a growing number of incidents affecting nearby residents.

In one case, a couple were pursued to their home in Westcliff and had their windows smashed by yobs. Police vehicles on patrol have also had coins thrown at them by so-called cruisers bent on mischief.

Mr Thwaites said: "I am committed to closing off that section of road every Saturday night for as long as it takes.

"The closure will stay there until we are satisfied the behaviour of the people in that area is acceptable. My first concern is public safety."

Mr Thwaites said talks had taken place with seafront traders and Southend Council and that a long-term solution could lie in a permanent change in traffic management for the seafront. Campaigners today welcomed the police stance.
