Paul Jones, much to the surprise of everyone (including himself) was the star of Thurrock Harriers' challenge in the Chelmsford 10k Road Race.

A leading figure in the early 90s, the demands of a teaching career has in recent years limited his time to compete and train.

On Sunday however he looked back to something like his best form when finishing tenth in 34mins 20secs.

Left in Jones' wake as he produced a strong finishing kick was Chris Hardy in 12th with a time of 34.26.

Andrew Rolfe gave another impressive display in adult company by finishing 14th and just ahead of Steve Williams, 30 years his senior, who nonetheless won yet another veterans' prize.

Thurrock were second to those regular winners Chelmsford and so much encouragement for the forthcoming county cross country championships. Also competing were Gary Collins, just inside the first 50 and 40 minutes, plus Martyn Staines who was 58th (40.20).

This weekend Harriers tackle the third round of the Essex Cross Country League which takes place at Stubbers Outdoor Pursuits Centre at North Ockendon.
