It's all systems go for Colchester's belated hi-tech bus information service.

The Essex Bus Telematics system was delayed for six months in May to allow the installation of a more powerful £18,000 radio transmitter.

Now that problems with radio coverage are over, the computerised black boxes at bus stops are flashing into life.

Essex County Council's £800,000 system, covering four towns in the county, tells passengers which bus is due next and how long they will have to wait.

It also allows buses, running late, to alter traffic lights, so they can catch up.

The scheme is part of the authority's bid to make public transport an attractive alternative to cars, by improving reliability and giving better information.

Philippe Pernstic, who is overseeing the project, said: "It is operational and where the signs are available, people are able to refer to them.

"Now the communications are sorted out, it is a case of adding more signs and buses, and making sure the drivers are trained."

Smartinfo stops have been installed at Tollgate, Head Street, North Station, Colchester General Hospital, High Street, St John's Street, High Woods Square, Essex County Hospital, Crouch Street and Middleborough.

And so far, about half the town's 60 buses have been fitted with a computer, with the rest being done in due course.
