The event, held at the plush Grosvenor Hotel in London's West End, saw Aidee named runner-up in the prestigious men's hairdresser of the year category.

After winning the award last year, Aidee again fought off the challenge of well- known snippers, Nicky Clarke and Trevor Sorbie, as well as thousands of other entrants.

Success in the competition, judged on a portfolio compiled over the whole year, comes in what is only Aidee's third year in the industry.

The champion stylist, of Stafford's in London Road, Leigh, said: "I was newcomer of the year in 1998, having qualified in eight months. Then I won the big one last year."

His team at Stafford's also won major plaudits at the awards.

Steve Turner, Martin Holmes, Mark Smith, Lee Stafford, Aidee Phelan and Billy finished runner-up in the art team of the year category.

A proud Aidee said: "The team is great and thoroughly deserves its success.

"I really value and enjoy working as a member of a team. This award shows how well we all work together."

As for the future, Aidee said: "I'd really like to work on TV at some stage. It's definitely something I'd love to get in to."
