Unfit drivers could find themselves walking a fine line or even standing on one leg as Essex Police implement new road tests.
As part of the Christmas drink-drive campaign it was revealed specially trained officers will subject motorists they suspect to be on drugs or drink to an impairment test.
The motorist will have their pupils examined and then be asked to perform a walk and turn, to stand on one leg and to touch their nose.
The tests are targeting the drug-drivers which breathalysers cannot detect as well as the traditional drink-driver.
It means a driver who provides a negative breath test but fails an impairment test could still be arrested.
Police have arrested a 52-year-old Chelmsford motorist after he failed the impairment tests even though he gave a negative breath test.
The man was released on bail awaiting the results of a blood test and could be charged if results prove positive.
