Mystery today surrounds how a man found dead lying by the railway track in Colchester came to be there.
His body was found near to the section of track, which runs alongside the A12 and Bakers Lane in Colchester, shortly before 6am on Saturday morning.
A passer-by walking in the area raised the alarm after finding the man, who is in his 40s and thought to be from the area, beside the track about a mile and a quarter north of the town's north station.
Police from Colchester and the British Transport Police were called in to investigate but Sgt Mick Sharp, of Colchester police, confirmed the death was not being treated as suspicious.
But the circumstances surrounding his death are not yet known and the British Transport Police are now appealing for help in piecing together what happened.
A spokeswoman said: "Anyone who can help us find out how the man got there or who saw anything should contact us immediately."
A post mortem examination is due to be carried out on the man today while police were attempting to get in contact with relatives.
Anyone with information should contact British Transport Police on 0800 405040 and quote incident 157
