A new pub in Chelmsford town centre could signify that the town is no longer as desirable to retailers as it used to be, a meeting heard.
Last night Chelmsford Council approved plans for a change of use of the empty space next to H&M on the former Bollingbroke and Wenley site in High Street to allow for a JD Wetherspoon pub.
Neil Gulliver (Con, Springfield South) said: "This is the fifth site in the town centre that is changing use and being used for other than a retail purpose.
"We have an economic development plan that says business is booming here and retailers are fighting for space.
"But the message we are getting is that nobody wants to come here. It is the worst case scenario that we can't get anyone better."
