Southend United are through to the third round of the FA Cup after beating Chesterfield 2-0 in a second-round replay at Roots Hall last night.

It took less than two minutes for Southend to get on the score sheet with a goal from skipper Phil Whelan.

But it was not until five minutes before the end that The Shrimpers managed to add to that tally.

Barrington Bellgrave added the second in the 85th minute to secure a third round home tie against second division Tranmere Rovers.

There were chances for either side to score and Tesfaye Bramble scuffed his shot with one of the clearest chances of the evening.

But Southend goalkeeper Darryl Flahavan denied the visiting side to ensure it was The Shrimpers who made it through to the next round.
