A £1.6m base is on the cards to provide resources and services to people with special care needs in Colchester.

Plans for a base in the west of the town are to be discussed today by Essex County Council's community care select committee.

The scheme has been made a high priority by the committee and if it comes to fruition, part of Eastwick House in New Farm Road, Stanway, will be refurbished.

The new base would complement the recently refurbished Brook Street resource centre in east Colchester.

The new centre would allow service users with special care needs currently using a New Possibilities Trust building to be relocated.

If all goes according to plan and the scheme is accepted by the council cabinet, work could start on the project in April 2004.

Also up for discussion are plans to spend more than £2m on a similar base in Witham and a £2m resource centre for the Tendring community.
