Plans to demolish farm buildings at Highfields Farm, East Hanningfield, and build "affordable" homes with new access roads on a 2.5 hectare site have been approved by Chelmsford Council's planning committee.

The application, from the Essex Villages Housing Association, suggested that the proposed houses would be built in three terraces, councillors were told in a report on Monday.

Chelmsford is an area of considerable demand for housing, with high house prices, often putting home ownership beyond the reach of those on modest or low incomes, it added.

"The proposal would provide some more readily affordable family sized accommodation for locally employed people," it went on.

The parish council supported the application subject to a number of conditions.

Councillors instructed their head of town planning services, Mr Clive Hollyman, to give the go- ahead subject to legal agreements.
