Thousands of homes in Wickford and South Woodham Ferrers were plunged into darkness for nearly 90 minutes last night after sparks were seen coming from an electricity sub station.
Firefighters were called to Willow Grove, South Woodham Ferrers, at 4.45pm. There were no flames but officers from South Woodham fire station called the electricity board to shut down the power and make sure the area was safe.
A spokesman for 24/7 electricity board said: "There was a fault on one of our high voltage overhead lines and we isolated the fault and shut down the power for around an hour and a half to make sure the area was safe."
