Hard-up voluntary groups in Walton are missing out on cash.
Earlier this year, a jackpot of £10,000 was announced for the resort's organisations. But the take up has been poor.
And yesterday there was a warning they could miss out if they don't meet the March deadline when all the money has to be distributed.
The money has been made available from the active community unit of the Home Office, which has helped previously similar groups in Jaywick.
Maximum grants of £500 are available and there is no restriction on the use of the money.
For the first time this year a grants panel of residents has been set up to distribute the money.
But Michael Hipkin, chairman of the Walton panel, said only a handful of applicants had come forward.
Applications which are just waiting to be rubber-stamped have included contributions to the British Legion Womens Section, Naze preservationists and the Royal Marine pub women's rowing team
Anyone wishing to apply can contact the Colchester and Tendring Community Trust at 25 Oaks Drive, Colchester, CO3 3PR or telephone them on 01206 500443.
