A doctor arrested on suspicion of murdering up to 40 patients has been cleared after a police investigation.

In the clear - Basildon Hospital consultant anaethetist Ann David

No further action is being taken against Ann David, of Station Crescent, Rayleigh, who was quizzed over claims that high dose painkillers were used on seriously ill patients.

Ms David, 42, a consultant anaesthetist at Basildon Hospital, was suspended from her job in August 2000, following her arrest.

Officers were called in by Basildon and Thurrock Hospitals Trust after an independent investigation was carried out following concerns raised internally.

A file was sent to the Crown Prosecution Service and as a result criminal proceedings have been dropped against Ms David. Ms David, who works in the intensive care unit at Basildon Hospital, has now been released from her bail.

An Essex Police spokesman said: "As far as we are concerned this is the end of the matter and there will be no further police action."

A spokeswoman for the Basildon and Thurrock Hospitals Trust said Ms David remained suspended by the General Medical Council. The trust could not act until the GMC looked at the case again, she added.
