Young people across Southend can start the new year on a healthy note - thanks to a helping hand from the town's youth service.

On Thursday youth workers will be giving out special New Year Survival Bags in an attempt to raise awareness of healthy living.

More than 200 bags will be handed out between 11am and 2pm to passers-by and young people who call into the Young People's HelpDesk at the Focus Youth House in Short Street, Southend. The bags will be full of information on stopping smoking, how to eat healthily and the affects of alcohol.

They also contain goodies like a non-alcoholic drink and a cold-busting packet of tissues. Information on the service's wide range of programmes is also included in the bags.

Youth service manager Michael Bracey said: "This is a fun way of getting across an important look-after- yourself message at this time of the year."
