Blues fan Sir Teddy Taylor wants Prime Minister Tony Blair to avoid Commons debates when Southend United are playing.

The Tory MP was forced to miss a crucial FA Cup second round match after Mr Blair called a debate at the end of a busy political day.

Sir Teddy was among hundreds of politicians who stayed late to debate whether Sinn Fein MPs should be allowed offices at the House of Commons even though they refuse to swear allegiance to the Queen.

Southend won the match 2-0 and Sir Teddy was informed of the victory by wife Sheila at the end of the session.

Sir Teddy said: "I was really looking forward to the match and was a little disappointed that I could not attend. Tony Blair called the debate at the end of a busy day and I had to stay there until the end.

"I was in the House until midnight and minutes after I left I got a call from my family telling me Southend had won. At least I was happy about one thing. We may have lost the debate but Southend were through to the next round of the cup."

Sir Teddy joked: "I am going to ask Tony Blair if he can avoid debates when Southend United are playing."
