Martin Quinn proved himself to be the mighty Quinn when he beat around 50 runners taking part in Southend Athletic Club's annual Pier Race.

Winner: Martin Quinn

And he might have been Quinn the eskimo too as heavy frost kept the hardy Boxing Day souls off the pier for the first time in many years.

They pounded the seafront instead to notch up their 2.5 miles, with younger runners going on a shorter course from the pier to the Westcliff Leisure Centre.

Martin, who is manager of Southend and District Junior League under-15 team Trinity, ran the course in 17.00 mins.

His wife, Maureen, was fourth and their sons, Daniel and Kieran, were also among the field. The athletic club are now starting preparations for next year's race which will mark the festive dash's 50th anniversary.

Organisers are hoping that the weather will be kinder to allow the use of the pier, which was deemed unsafe for runners on Wednesday.
