Staff at South Woodham Ferrer's Asda were met with an icy reception when they returned to work last Thursday after the store's heating packed up.
But customers weren't left out in the cold as workers donned their coats and carried on working in temperatures of 15 degrees.
"It was especially cold because the store had been closed for two days over Christmas. We didn't have many complaints though because people had come out in their hats and coats anyway," said a store spokeswoman.
It is believed a faulty heating element in the roof caused the problem. Business was back to normal the next day when the heating was fixed.
