Controversial plans to sell ice cream and other seaside goodies from Frinton's cherished seafront are set for an icy reception when they go before councillors.

Planning officers have recommended that entrepreneur Ernie White's plan for kiosks should be given the cold shoulder.

Mr White, who was the man behind Frinton's first town-centre fish and chip shop, has suggested a seafront kiosk, either on the promenade or on the resort's sacred greensward.

The bid has sparked a major debate among traditionalists and conservationists, and some town traders fear they will lose trade.

Almost 370 letters of protest have been received by Tendring Council objecting to a kiosk on the promenade opposite Connaught Avenue and just over 350 to placing one on the Kiosk Field a section of grass at the golf club end of the greensward.

Among the protesters are town councillors, but the county council's historic buildings adviser felt the hut on the promenade was similar to those nearby and suggested consent.

Tendring Council will consider the applications next week.
