Pupils attending a south Essex school are not getting enough fresh air, sunlight or exercise during the day, according to their headteacher.

From the beginning of next term, the vast majority of pupils at FitzWimarc School, in Hockley Road, Rayleigh, will have to go outside at lunchtime rather than having free access to their form rooms during the break in winter months.

Headteacher Jim Fuller said: "We have found the present policy has severe drawbacks."

He added research had shown that lack of fresh air had a detrimental affect on learning and behaviour.

During wet or very cold weather, Mr Fuller said the arrangements would be suspended and pupils should be outside for about 30 minutes.
