The students were at Shaw Primary School, in Avon Green, South Ockendon, as part of a research project into how children aged six to eight learn to play and built a giant game of snakes and ladders to assist in their work.
The school got involved through a pupil's parent who is studying at the university.
Headteacher Linzi Roberts-Egan said: "The children loved it and had a great time. They appeared highly motivated."
