Two large Thurrock councillors are planning to shed pounds to raise funds for the Thurrock Community Chest.

Current mayor, Barrie Lawrence and chest founder Carl Morris launched their sponsored slim on Friday at the Blackshots leisure centre in Grays.

The pair have promised to donate £1 for every 1lb they lose - and are on the lookout for sponsors to help their efforts.

Friday's weigh-in saw Coun Lawrence tip the scales at 17 stone 7lbs (245lbs) and Coun Morris at 16 stone 5lbs (229lbs).

The Community Chest has already raised more than £75,000 for local groups and organisations since its launch during Coun Morris' term as mayor in 1999.

The chest - a charitable trust - has several corporate sponsors, including Tony LeVoi Motors, the Lakeside Shopping Centre, Bannatyne's Health Club, the Government of Gibraltar, Industrial Chemicals, Cargill, Procter and Gable, and Commodore Kitchens.

It aims to encourage groups and individuals of all ages and abilities to excel in academic. sporting and artistic fields; to support Thurrock-based voluntary and community groups and to build and maintain links between the borough's business and voluntary sectors.

Anybody who would like to sponsor the "slim-in" or donate money to the Community Chest, should contact the mayor's secretary, Johanna Robb, on 01375 652030.
