A man from south Essex will lead the crusade to save the forgotten and injured animals of Afghanistan when he travels to the volatile area today.
Trevor Wheeler, of Highland Road, Bowers Gifford, is the operations director with the charity the World Society for the Protection of Animals.
The 50-year-old will join a task force assessing the condition of livestock and horses and the welfare of animals in Kabul zoo.
He said: "We will not know how badly the animals have been affected until we get there."
