Southend police are supporting a campaign for reform of the courts system to prevent criminals escaping justice.

The police division is supporting the national campaign, launched by Britain's top police officers, which calls for a major overhaul of the way criminal trials are conducted, in a bid to restore public confidence in the justice system.

Supt Mick Thwaites, commander of Southend police, said: "Our main priority is to fight crime, in particular burglary, violent crime and vehicle crime.

"We rely on the public to give us information and support and to do so they need to have trust and confidence in both the police and the criminal justice system as a whole."
