Wickford's newest primary school will top the list when it opens in September - and not just because its name starts with A.
Abacus Primary will provide up to 210 much-needed places as housing developments in the surrounding Wick estate continues.
School bosses admit the name is not traditional and may raise a few eyebrows among parents. However, they say it is ideal because it is synonymous with education and is a word understood by young and old.
The name of the school, being built on Tresco Way, has been agreed by governors.
Chairman Sheila Becker said: "We wanted something which would stand out, which was different. And something beginning with an A as well because it means we will always be at the top of the list in everything we do!"
Councillor Malcolm Buckley (Con, Wickford South), who sits on the board of governors, said he felt the name would be less important to parents in the long-term than the expectation of high quality education.
