Colchester United have been hit by a thunderbolt with the news that club captain Simon Clark has quit.
Saying goodbye to the U's - skipper Simon Clark
Clark sprung his shock decision to quit Layer Road on U's boss Steve Whitton less than 48 hours after skippering the team to a meritous goalless draw at promotion-chasing Tranmere Rovers last Saturday.
A stunned Whitton said: "I cannot say too much at this time, but Simon came and saw me and asked if he could be released from his contract forthwith.
"He informed me that he wants to play his football and take his family out to the Far East with immediate effect."
Clark's wife is of eastern origin.
Whitton added: "The club has relucantly agreed to Simon's wishes, but his decision to quit certainly came as a stunning blow."
