Government inspectors have awarded high marks to Thurrock's biggest school after a three-day visit to check out its standards of teaching.

A 15-strong team from OFSTED inspected William Edwards School in Stifford Clays Road, Grays, in November and has just published its report.

Inspectors say the school which has more than 1,200 pupils provides a high proportion of good and very good teaching through effective leadership and management.

Students achieve well in relation to their attainment on entry and the school provides good value for money.

Head teacher Brenda Watson said: "The inspection forms a very positive and well-deserved compliment to our students, staff, governors, parents and other partners.

"The excellent report has not been achieved without tremendous hard work and it is important that the contribution of every individual is noted.

Areas for improvement suggested by the inspectors will form the basis of a governors' action plan.
