Rail services were thrown into disarray today after a station platform collapsed at Alresford.
Commuters at Colchester North Station faced overcrowding and delays after the Clacton to Colchester line was closed.
Surveyors inspect the sinking platform
And services all the way up the line to Liverpool Street and Norwich were affected as coastal commuters transferred to other stations.
Delays were blamed on a platform collapse at Alresford.
A Railtrack spokesman said today contractors had been carrying out resurfacing work at the station and noticed the coping stones at the edge of the platform were spreading out.
He said: "There appears to be a sag in the platform surface. We need to know why the platform is sinking. While the edge of the platform is moving it creates an obstruction which would be hit by passing trains. We are still trying to establish why this has happened."
