Southend has lost one of its best known characters with the sudden death of a former mayor who "brought sunshine and fun" into so many lives.

Family, friends and politicians of all parties were devastated today to learn of Beryl Scholfield's death at the age of 81.

"Our Beryl," as she was widely and affectionately known, died in Southend Hospital on Sunday after a short illness.

Her two sons and two daughters were today preparing to establish a memorial fund in honour of the grandmother of eight, who served so many areas of civic life for so many years.

Daughter Louise Manders said: "She was Southend through and through - so very, very proud of the town and its people and its achievements."
