A collection of war medals belonging to a veteran who has now died have been stolen by burglars.

The precious medals were left to the man's nephew after he passed away, who treasured them at his home in Woodhill Road, Danbury.

But now the heirlooms have been stolen and the nephew is devastated.

"They were of sentimental value to the owner. He said they were passed down to him and he treasured them," said Det Con Paul Ritson

Burglars took the Second World War service medals and two watches, one a retirement gift, after breaking through the back of the house. Six medals were taken in total and a £250 watch was engraved with the message: "For long service to GEC Marconi".

Police are appealing for anyone offered the stolen items to contact them immediately. Anyone with information should call South Woodham Ferrers police on 01245 320333 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111
