A woman was fighting for her life and a man was seriously injured today after two motorcycle accidents on south Essex roads within minutes of each other.

Police shut off a stretch of Kiln Road, Thundersley, for almost three hours last night after a Kawasaki and a Ford Escort collided at 6.25pm.

The 24-year-old woman biker was travelling towards Southend when she was in collision with the Escort as it turned into the Total petrol station. Wreckage of the motorbike blocked the road.

Sgt Russ Abbott, from Rayleigh traffic unit, said: "The woman biker was seriously injured and is in intensive care at Southend Hospital. We are hoping she is going to be lucky."

The driver of the Escort, also believed to be 24, suffered minor injuries.

Just 20 minutes later, another 24-year-old motorcyclist was taken to hospital with serious injuries after a collision on the A128.

The biker, travelling towards Brentwood, was in collision with a Fiesta as the driver reversed out of a premises.

The rider was taken to Basildon Hospital and the Fiesta driver was uninjured.
