Extra protection is in the pipeline for some of the world's toughest and best-trained troops - a neighbourhood watch scheme.
Colchester Neighbourhood Watch is in the process of launching a new initiative called Garrison Watch.
The Colchester watch group was approached by a garrison representative asking if a neighbourhood watch group could be set up in the military zone's housing areas.
If all goes ahead as planned, the resident-driven scheme would become part of the Colchester Neighbourhood Watch and will operate in accordance with Colchester Borough Neighbourhood Watch Constitution.
The idea has been supported by the MoD police force operating in the area.
The Colchester branch is also setting up a scheme called youth watch, which gives children the chance to get involved in community safety in schools. Information packs will be delivered to pupils at St Benedict's College and the Gilberd School.
The town will become one of the first nationwide to boast such a scheme.
