Former Southend United supremo John Main could be set for a return to football with ambitious Ryman Premier League outfit Billericay Town.

The 56-year-old has been out of the game following his controversial removal from the Roots Hall board at an extraordinary meeting during August 2000.

However, New Lodge chairman Rod Moore is believed to have offered Main a role with Town as a director.

Ex-Southend chairman Main was unavailable to comment on any speculation, despite being a spectator at Saturday's 1-1 home draw with Kingstonian.

But a decision is expected to be made within two weeks, with Billericay believing Main can play a big part in a push for the Conference League next term.

A New Lodge insider said: "The Billericay board were very impressed with Mr Main during his time at Southend.

"He built up a great rapport with the Blues fans and brought them back through the turnstiles by showing he cared about their club.

"Now we believe he could play a key role in the success of Billericay Town and we hope to hear about his future plans soon."
