Residents turned out to shun plans for a link road between Hatfield Peverel and Witham in favour of widening the A12 at an accident blackspot.

Villagers have campaigned for safety measures to be put in place to reduce the number of accidents on the two Hatfield Peverel slip roads for about 30 years.

The Highways Agency wants to see a 1.3km link road built, but last night the majority of the 100 villagers who attended a public meeting at the Church Hall in Church Road, Hatfield Peverel, said widening the A12 was a better option.

The Government will have the final say.

If the southern link road goes ahead it would see the closure of slip roads on the A12 described as "one of the most dangerous junctions in the UK" .

At the moment, the slip roads do not meet the Highways Agency's current design standards and about 15 people have died following accidents at the "death spots" with many seriously injured.

Details of the proposed link road on the southern side of the A12 were published in January last year before a three-month consultation period for the public to comment on the plan.

Work could be delayed if a public inquiry has to take place because of the opposing views to having a link road on the southern side.
