Real ale and red wine feature among the main interests of two Chelmsford dignitaries who have found their way into the latest edition of Who's Who.

His Honour Judge Darroch, a circuit judge, lists his hobbies as real ale, European travel and gardening.

The Venerable David Lowman, archdeacon of Southend since last year, lists red wine as one his main hobbies, along with cricket, opera and travel.

Ven Lowman was previously team rector for Wickford and Runwell as part of the Diocese of Chelmsford, and the non-residentiary Canon of Chelmsford Cathedral.

Between 1993-2001 he was a member of a working party in the House of Bishops and reported on the controversial matter of marriage in church after divorce.

He said: "It's rather pleasant to find yourself in Who's Who, and it's a great honour to have the role that I have in the church."

John Davies, Chairman of the Civil Service Appeal board, governor of Felsted School and trustee of Farleigh Hospice, has also made his way into the celebrated publication but highlighted a more sober hobby, identifying the Church of England as one of his interests.

The entrants, who can choose to miss out or include as much detail as they like, provide their own biographies for the world-famous reference book, affectionately known as the Snobs' Bible.

The 2002 edition of Who's Who lists some 30,000 achievers, approximately 1,000 of who are new for this year.
