Millennium Volunteers from Thurrock who took part in a sponsored 24-hour famine raised more than £500 for a hostel for the homeless.

They used the cash to buy games and equipment to make life more pleasant for residents in the Southend Night Shelter and recently visited the hostel to hand over the gifts.

The Southend shelter houses homeless people from Thurrock and many other areas of Essex.

Millennium Volunteer project worker, Vicki Kitts and Millennium Volunteers Andrew Ainge, Alaina Penhallow and Pauline Jones handed over the gifts to Terry Champ, acting chairman of the shelter.

Terry Champ said, "It is so nice to get such luxurious gifts for the young homeless people, they will be truly appreciated".

Millennium Volunteers is a national programme funded by the Department of Education and Skills to encourage young people between 16-24 years to volunteer in their community. The local contact for this scheme is Myra Potter and Vicki Kitts.
