Young people are to get hands-on advice on mobile phone safety in a pioneering experiment by police.

The Smart card will be small enough to slip inside any wallet or purse and will provide essential tips to users on how to avoid becoming the next victim of a mobile phone robbery.

The scheme has been thought up by Wickford's community liaison officer PC Geoff Whiter and pupils at the town's secondary schools could be the first to benefit from it.

The card lists five tips on phone security which correspond to the letters in the word smart.

On the card, the S is secure your telephone by using the security lock, M is mark your telephone with your postcode, A is avoid displaying your phone in crowded places, R is record your serial and IMEI numbers separately, while T is take your phone with you.

If the scheme is successful, it could be extended, not only for schoolchildren but for retailers too.
