Researchers from Essex University are spearheading research into forms of electronic voting that could be in place by the next General Election.
It is believed that Remote Voting by Electronic Means (RVEM) could be a solution to the low turn-out of voters at polling stations.
The new plans would see the public able to cast their vote by telephone, television or specially-designed machines.
Now Dr Sarah Birch, from the Department of Government, and Bob Watt, from the Department of Law, are conducting research to determine what the technology would mean if introduced.
The Colchester campus is involved in the project, along with the De Montfort University in Leicester and the British Market Research Board.
The completion date for the research is March 8 and the findings will be published in May, to coincide with the RVEM pilot schemes during local elections.
