Protesters fear they have missed their chance to object to a mobile phone mast planned for a nature reserve -- because of delays in the application.

Anyone objecting to the mast on Basildon reservoir in Leysings, Lee Chapel South, only have until tomorrow to make their views known.

Letters were sent to just a handful of neighbouring residents about the plans - giving them 21-days to comment - but many others feel their views should also be considered.

Confusion made matters worse when the initial application from Orange was left dormant for four months while the company paid its application fee. Residents believed that was the end of the plans.

A council spokesman said: "We are prevented by legislation and we can only issue letters to those adjacent to the site, which we have done. If residents outside the boundary wish to object, we will treat their views on merit."

The council is due to make its decision by March 27. Orange was unavailable to comment.
