Great Dunmow Maltings has beaten off international competition to win a coveted Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) Award for building conservation.
The former brewery and 16th Century building in Mill Lane won the award for its restoration of a derelict maltings when it was saved from demolition in 1995 with the formation of a Building Preservation Trust.
With help from Bob Cowlin, surveyor at Strutt and Parker in Chelmsford, architect Kay Pilsbury and contractor John W Younger, the building is now open to the public.
It now contains a museum, tourist information centre, meeting place and exhibition centre, while maintaining the full historic malting process within the building.
On receiving the plaque from RICS President Peter Faulkner at the London Grosvenor House Hotel, chairman of the Trustees David Westcott said: "It was a team effort and we are all very pleased to receive this accolade. Of course the building was only restored after a lot of work from a lot of people."
