Two of the Ryman League's form sides battled out a 1-1 draw on Saturday, with Braintree leaving Hertfordshire satisfied with their day's effort.
For long periods though it looked as if the Essex outfit were set for another three points on the road, as they tore into their opponents early on, threatening through Nicky Simpson.
The breakthrough arrived on 29 minutes as Dean Parratt's corner landed at the feet of Simpson, and he beat home keeper James Robinson with ease.
More good running from the visitors had Hitchin pegged back for the remainder of the first half, and it wasn't until the hour mark that home supporters had something to get excited about, with Shaun Marshall looking the most threatening up front.
And it took until the 85th minute for the breakthrough to finally arrive, with Matt Nolan hooking the ball in for Anthony Francis, who beat Paul Catley first time.
A point apiece in an entertaining end of season clash.
