The historic gardens at Severalls Hospital have been listed by English Heritage - but it does not guarantee their future.

The Colchester parkland has been put on its register of historic parks and gardens at Grade II level.

But Sarah Rutherford, acting head of the register, said: "It does not automatically preclude development within that site. It means Colchester Council, in determining any planning application, must take into account the historic character of the site."

This means the council must seek advice on any application which could affect the historical nature. However, it has the final decision and if it allowed development which affected this nature, the site would simply be removed from the register.

The news was met with regret by local campaigners. Ian Richards from the Save Severalls campaign, said: "It's better than nothing, but I'm disappointed that it only provides the minimum level of protection."
