Mobile phone giants have a fight on their hands to install a mast near angry residents.

An action group has been set up to fight Orange's plans to install a 15m mast in London Road, Leigh.

The mast, next to Portsmouth Stationers, will include three antenna, four dishes and ten equipment cabins.

Residents started a petition after being notified by letter from Southend Council about Orange's plans.

Mum-of-two Denise Withrington, of Grasmead Avenue, Leigh, said neighbours, who have set up the Leigh Mast Action Campaign Group, are up-in-arms.

She said: "We are worried about our brains being frazzled. We would rather be safe than sorry."

A Southend Council spokesman said: "Planning officers have inspected the proposed site and the matter is due to be reported to the development control committee tomorrow. The officers have recommended to committee members the application be turned down."

A spokesman for Orange said: "Orange acknowledges public concern regarding the siting of transmitters, however, there is no conclusive evidence that makes a link between exposure to radio waves, transmitter sites and long-term public health risks."
