Arsonists were today blamed after a blaze ripped through a block of ten bedsits in Southend.

Firefighters tackled ferocious flames licking the front of the building in Hastings Road at 6.20pm yesterday and restrained a resident who was insistent about going back inside.

Finally, officers had to call in the police while they entered the flats in which people were believed to be trapped.

Kevin Playfair, temporary sub officer at Southend fire station, said: "When we arrived the gutter along the roof was melted - that was how far the flames were reaching."

Firefighters in breathing apparatus had to battle their way through the blaze and thick smoke to get to the fire and put out the flames.

Officers then searched the building, breaking into rooms to make sure everyone had managed to get out safely.

Mr Playfair added: "One man was trying to get back into his flat and he was putting himself in danger. As a result he was restrained by a member of the public and the police were called.

Insp Richard Thomas, of Southend police, said: "There was also a public order incident at the scene and a male in his late teens is helping us with our inquiries."
