Police today described an attack by a gang on a transexual awaiting a sex-change operation as a "despicable hate crime".

The victim went to the Jolly Friar pub , Basildon, dressed as a woman and was attacked by four men later in Bowers Lane.

One grabbed her by the throat while another threatened to "kick her head in" before they grabbed her handbag and demanded her shoes.
