A Brentwood couple have blown a fuse over tactics used by a doorstep salesman.

Angry Andrew King claims his wife was conned into signing a contract to switch to British Gas for the supply of electricity.

Nurse Kathy King says she was tricked into signing the paperwork because she was led to believe it was merely a request for more information.

But when they studied the document later they realised she had authorised British Gas to supply all their energy needs.

Mr King, a construction worker, of Firsgrove Crescent, Brentwood, said: "My wife told the salesman she couldn't sign anything until we had discussed it. He said that if he took her name and details they could send further information. He filled it in and asked her to put her name on the bottom."

Mr King contacted British Gas as soon as they realised the document was a contract.

A spokesman for British Gas promised to investigate.
