South Woodham's Tropical Wings has unveiled new plans for its bird and butterfly gardens.
Owners hope to create a children's playground, special events lawn, pony ride area, goat paddock and outdoor butterfly enclosure, as well as increasing parking facilities to accommodate increasing visitor numbers.
Proprietor Rona Richardson said: "The intention was always to expand and turn ourselves into a premier tourist attraction. In that sense it's a progression of the project."
She added that if plans are approved, the centre hoped to have the new area ready by next spring.
A spokeswoman for Essex Tourism Association said: "Tropical Wings is very popular because there's no other place like it in the south of Essex."
The planning application is now with Chelmsford Borough Council and is set to be decided by the middle of September.
