One of the first call-outs of Army green goddesses in Colchester ended with the crew having to be rescued.

The ageing engine, one of two covering the Colchester area during the firefighters' strike action, had to call in help from another Army truck after getting stuck in mud.

The crew were called to a rubbish fire in Greenstead at 9.45pm last night, just under four hours after the firefighters staged the first walk-out of the strikes.

Army drivers were then called to the incident, in Forest Road, to rescue the trapped fire engine.

A spokesman for the MoD today said it was an "unfortunate" incident that could have happened to any motorist.

The strike is due to end at 6pm tomorrow. Emergencies should be reported by calling 999 as normal
