A man has spoken of his family's fear after a series of road accidents where cars smashed into their front garden.

George Beckwith, of Witham Road, Black Notley, said: "We live on a bend and in the last few months we have had three cars come off the road and into the driveway."

He decided "enough was enough" after a Fiat Punto car left the road and smashed into his BMW, in the driveway, at about 1.30am yesterday morning.

The driver of the Fiat sped off without stopping to leave details and the crash caused severe damage to Mr Beckwith's car.

Mr Beckwith said: "It's a 30mph speed limit but people treat it like a racetrack. Someone is going to get killed."

Insp Mark Harmer, of Bocking traffic police, said: "As a result of that crash and several others along that stretch of road between Braintree and White Notley, I will be looking at the whole of that road.

Elaine Beckett, the county council's road safety officer, added that more 30mph speed limit signs are going to be put up along the road and a zebra crossing will be added to improve pedestrian safety.
