Sprucing up Billericay is top of the agenda for the town council's team of eager gardeners.

A tree planting ceremony was held yesterday as part of a scheme aimed at making sure Billericay is kept green throughout the year.

And yesterday Trevor Stansfield, town council chairman, helped plant a sapling outside Webber's Wine Bar, near Western Road, in the High Street.

He said: "This is all part of the council's programme for greening Billericay, which includes sponsor a shrub and the In Bloom competition.

"There used to be trees outside the wine bar, but one has been missing for a while, so we thought it would be good start to get one planted."
