The head of a Victorian primary school has welcomed a decision by planners to finally give the go-ahead to long-awaited improvements, including a new hall that will end a dangerous walk for the 98 pupils.

Stephen Young, Head of Stisted Church of England Primary School said: "We are absolutely delighted. It's been something that the school has needed for years."

The plans for the changes were deferred twice by the Braintree Area Committee after councillors queried points that included the height of the hall and the effect on neighbouring property.

But after the roof height was lowered by over a metre the go-ahead was given.

Mr Young said: "To have a hall on site is going to mean an awful lot to the children and the staff. At the moment we have to walk up to the village hall and that has its health and safety implications.

"Its quite a hazardous route. We have walky-talkies, safety jackets and lights."

In the first phase there will also be a new staff room and new toilets for the children, a disabled toilet and a resource room for ICT and library.

The work on the £500,000 project is due to start in March.
